In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8th, we’re sharing stories from the amazing women who work on the front lines of our programs, from counsellors to support workers. Every day, they work hard and show great compassion to the brave and resilient women who come through our doors.

“One story that stands out to me is the first intake I did with a woman who came to the transition house about a month ago. She came with her young child.

They had to find their way to Dixon with only $2 in her bank account—not enough to pay for bus fare for even one of them.

She shared with me how embarrassed she felt to not be able to pay, so she wrote a note for the driver saying that she was traveling to a transition house. The driver wasn’t sympathetic and rudely asked her to just sit down.

I could tell that the encounter, along with the weight of leaving her abusive partner, had really taken a toll on her.

She told me she had wanted to cry, but she didn’t want to show weakness in front of her child.

It really put into perspective the huge weight and responsibility of being a mother experiencing the impacts of domestic violence.”
