In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8th, we’re sharing stories from the amazing women who work on the front lines of our programs, from counsellors to support workers. Every day, they work hard and show great compassion to the brave and resilient women who come through our doors.

” ‘I had to make a decision to bring my child to a safer environment,’ she told me.

When her daughter first came to the transition house, I noticed certain behaviours that she must have learned over the years to soothe herself—rocking back and forth, putting her hands in her mouth. It broke my heart.

When I asked the mother if there was anything we could support her with, she put her child first. She asked for support in finding a counselling program for her.

Not too long later, she told me she was returning to work because she wanted to save money for her child’s education in the future.

Recently, she received an offer for temporary housing. However, the housing opportunity didn’t provide enough space or time to fit her family’s needs. Plus, it was far from daycare and work. She knew if she declined, she would have to continue searching for housing. There was no guarantee that she would find something better anytime soon. Again, however, she thought of her child’s best interests and declined the offer.

I was so proud to see her trust herself to make the best decision for her family. I also found out today that she heard back about an application we had sent to put her child in a counselling program.

She inspires me so much because although she’s going through hard times, she’s still doing everything in her power to provide for her child. She is such a strong and loving mother, and so resilient.”
