At Dixon Transition Society, we are deeply committed to supporting women and children in their journey toward safety, independence, and empowerment. As part of this mission, we’re proud to participate in One Billion Rising, the world’s largest global movement to end violence against women, girls, and gender-expansive people.

What is One Billion Rising?

One Billion Rising was founded in 2012 by activist and playwright Eve Ensler. The movement’s name is based on a staggering statistic: 1 in 3 women will experience violence in their lifetime, which equals over one billion women globally. This global reality has driven the need for collective action—One Billion Rising calls on individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide to rise together and demand an end to gender-based violence.

Each year, people come together through dance, art, and activism to raise awareness, celebrate resilience, and demand an end to violence in all its forms. It is a call for solidarity, and a moment of hope for those affected by violence.

The 2025 Theme: “Rise for Freedom”

The theme for 2025 is “Rise for Freedom”, a powerful stand against the growing rise of fascism, authoritarianism, and inequality worldwide. This year’s campaign focuses on creating creative resistance against oppression, while emphasizing the importance of community, inclusion, care, and love over division and violence. The theme underscores that the fight for freedom is deeply interconnected with the fight for gender equality, justice, and human rights.

Why One Billion Rising Matters

One Billion Rising isn’t just an event—it’s a powerful movement that unites people across the globe in the fight against systemic violence and oppression. Every year, millions of voices rise to demand that no one—regardless of gender, race, or background—should ever face violence, discrimination, or marginalization. It’s a global expression of solidarity and a call for a world where women, children, and gender-expansive individuals are treated with dignity, respect, and equality.

The importance of celebrating One Billion Rising cannot be overstated. It provides a platform for survivors to share their stories, for activists to mobilize, and for communities to stand together in support of those who need it the most. It’s a reminder that we all have a role to play in creating a world where violence is no longer tolerated, where love and compassion replace fear and hatred, and where justice prevails for all.
