In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8th, we’re sharing stories from the amazing women who work on the front lines of our programs, from counsellors to support workers. Every day, they work hard and show great compassion to the brave and resilient women who come through our doors.

“One of the mothers at Wenda’s Place works long hours. Beyond that, she was struggling to deal with the temperaments and mental health of her kids. She recently mentioned how excited she was about her kids taking part in extracurricular activities.

A couple weeks before, it had been one of my tasks to do some preliminary research about any activities that both of the kids would be interested in. I then passed on the information without any further thought until that moment weeks later.

The mom was so excited because she noticed a drastic change in the happiness of her kids. This was one of the first times I saw her so carefree and happy. I could feel how much the well-being of her children meant to her. I always love seeing any mother happy for her children’s happiness. It gave me a new perspective about some of my seemingly small day-to-day tasks because I saw firsthand how much they could affect a family. The strength this mother has and the progress she is making is incredible.”

Sam is a practicum student at Wenda’s Place, Second Stage Housing for 2019-2020.

Every year, over 500 women and children seek safety, guidance, and hope at Dixon. You can help.
